Online Library and Archival Training Courses and Seminars

In addition to its research workshops and conferences, the BBF as an infrastructural institution aims to support researchers in the history of education with its library and archival training courses and seminars. In particular, it seeks to strengthen their information and research skills.

The Digital History of Education Lab (DHELab) organizes further training courses and events, especially on topics relating to the digital history of education. Guided tours are also available on request introducing you into the use of the collections on site.

Online Training Courses

The BBF currently offers two online training courses targeting researchers in the history of education, but which are open to all interested parties. No specific qualifications are required. Helpful materials and tools are presented and made available in the training courses followed by extensive exercises. Further training courses are in preparation.

Training Course I: Information and Retrieval Skills for Educational History Researchers
(Duration: 90 minutes, in German, via Zoom)

  • Information retrieval strategies for library catalogs
  • Using selected databases and digital resources
  • Exploring special collections of the BBF
  • Accessing and using the BBF's digital holdings

Course II: Archive Holdings and Archival Research for eEucational Historians
(Duration: 90 minutes, in German, via Zoom)

  • Archives: How they work, how research can be conducted there and what support is available
  • Holdings of the BBF archive and other archives and collections relevant to the history of education
  • Legal issues: Copyright, archival and privacy rights

Seminars

The BBF offers universities the opportunity to hold seminars and tutorials on educational science, school history and historical topics using archival sources and/or library collections on the BBF's premises.

The seminars are planned and conducted by BBF staff in collaboration with the university tutors and lecturers.

Participants also receive an introduction to handling of archival and library materials as part of the seminars.
